BMKG: Jakarta Safe from Solar Storm

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) asserted that solar storm that was reported heading for the Earth today, March 15, has a little impact on the weather in Jakarta and Indonesia in general.
BMKG spokesperson Hary Tirto Djatmiko explained that the storm would not essentially affect Indonesia because the country is crossed by the Earth’s equator.
“Indonesia lies in the equator so it has a low possibility to experience trouble causing by this geomagnetic storm,” said Hary in a written statement Friday, March 15.

Hary explained that solar storm is temporary trouble in the Earth’s magnetosphere due to the interaction of solar wind and the Earth’s magnetic field. The phenomenon, he added, regularly occurred as a result of coronal mass ejection (CME).
Solar storm, he continued, would not affect the country’s weather. As for areas in the high latitude will experience minor trouble on satellite system and electrical network. "But the possibility is low," Hary concluded.
